Abstract

After the events of February 24, 2022, the entire civilized world became chained to Ukraine. Political figures and authoritative mass media could not stand aside from the war in Ukraine, condemning the actions of the aggressor country and supporting the Ukrainian people in their difficult struggle. Of course, when expressing their position, politicians used phraseological units to give their language expressiveness and emotionality. In general, the idioms they used to indicate their negative or neutral attitude can be classified according to their structure, the presence of a metaphorical element, and their origin. It is interesting that most of the idioms used are of military or political origin, although there are also those that come from sports, seafaring, aviation, litigation and money. Analyzing phraseological units by structure, it becomes clear that politicians most often use phraseological units consisting of a verb and a postpositive, and taking into account the metaphorical meaning, the most common in military-political discourse are idioms.
