Standardisation of E-Merging IoT Applications: Past, Present, and a Glimpse into the Future

Abstract

The standardisation of applications of the Internet of Things will pose additional requirements on the standards setting process. This is largely due to the need for multidisciplinary co-operation. This paper analyses the development of the standardisation activities for Intelligent Transport Systems, Smart Manufacturing and the Smart Grid over the past twenty years. Based on this analysis an it looks into the crystal ball to make a tentative prediction about the future structure of the international standardisation system.
