Abstract

Since the 1960s, western developed countries represented by the United States have generally suffered from the crisis of government trust, which has been on a continuous decline. The issue of government trust has also attracted worldwide academic attention.Based on the fourth wave of the Asia Barometer data, this paper conducts an empirical study on the current situation of government trust in the Chinese mainland and finds that it has the following characteristics: first, the overall level of government trust in the Chinese mainland is moderate.Secondly, the level of government trust in mainland China varies from institution to institution. There is a "descending hierarchy" pattern at the central and local levels, and citizens have higher trust in the government of the military, police and other authoritarian institutions.Third, the level of government trust in mainland China is generally high in the north and low in the south, and high in villages and low in cities.
