The structures of the new Schiff base ligand and their transition metal complexes were characterized by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) technique, ultraviolet visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), mass analysis, molar conductance, and magnetic susceptibility. [(M)(L)2] where M = Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II), and [(M)(L)Cl]Cl where M = Au (III). The coordination sites of the Schiff base ligand were revealed by FTIR to be  through oxygen of the hydroxyl group, and the nitrogen of  azomethine groups.
