Abstract
Design of very large complex systems is in trouble. Of course, that's the way it should be. A system would not deserve to be called very large and complex if it were not right at the edge of the humanly possible. In order to move on to the next level of human engineering achievement we must diagnose our present sticking points and find new ways to do things better.
