Abstract

ABSTRACT: Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen (1919-2004), one of the most important Portuguese poets of the second half of the XXth Century, described in several of her poems the sleeping-room, space that is a typical intimate retreat for the self. In analysing how the sleeping-room occurs in her work, we wish to point out the way some of the innermost aspects of the poetic self - such as solitude, the remembrance of past experiences, or the aggressiveness from the outside world - contribute to understand not only Sophia's singular poetic voice, but also her comprehension of human condition.
