Abstract
Here we report a gas dispersion simulator that can be used to develop and evaluate robotic systems for gas leak detection and gas source localization. The key contribution of this paper is a wind field generator capable of recreating highly fluctuating wind fields that we often encounter in open outdoor environments. Gas-source localization simulations can be done using artificially generated wind data that satisfy the statistical properties of natural wind. Results of the simulations are compared to simulation results obtained using wind data recorded in a real environment to show the effectiveness of the proposed wind generator.
