The Conservation of Heritage Submarines

Abstract

This paper explores the principal problems of heritage-submarine conservation, focusing on conservation studies on the U-505 in Chicago; the USS Silversides in Muskegon, Michi- gan; and HM Torpedo Boat Number 1, more commonly known as the Holland I, at Gosport, UK. The USS Pampanito in San Francisco; the first Holland I submarine, Holland's "Fenian Ram," and other prototypes in the Paterson Museum, New Jersey; and the U-534 in Birkenhead, UK, are also discussed.
