Abstract
This paper introduces a design of Ku-band reconfigurable reflectarray element. The element consists of four metallic layers and four PIN diodes integrated in the patches on the top layer. The biasing network is designed to control the biasing voltages applied on the pin diodes. Based on the on-off of the four PIN diodes, four states of 00, 01, 10, and 11 are designed, and the element produces 4 distinct phase responses of 0, π/2, π, 3π/2 to form a 2-bit phase quantization. The average insertion loss of the element is less than 1.5dB. This element has 2-bit phase shift effect and low insertion loss at 12GHz, which can be applied to reconfigurable reflectarray antenna.
