Interpretations of Number Operations and Symbolic Representations of Addition and Subtraction

Abstract

This chapter is presented in two principal sections. The first section emphasizes an all-too-frequently neglected interpretation of number operations that, I believe, has considerable import for the future research and instructional programs detailed in the second section. Although this first section is relatively unsophisticated, it goes well beyond the initial learning of addition and subtraction skills.
