Abstract
This paper describes the experimental characterization of an auto-lubricating vane pump (Gardner Denver Thomas G 24/04 EB) in simulated Mars environment. The pump volumetric flow rate has been measured upon varying the pressure difference between the intake and the discharge. Tests have been performed with a measurement system designed to operate both in terrestrial atmospheric conditions and in controlled pressure and temperature conditions. No degradation between the pump behavior in Mars pressure and in normal atmospheric pressure was detected. The pump has been eventually redesigned in order to assure resistance against mechanical loading at launch and landing and using materials compatible with the space and Mars environment.
