In this context the effect of Static Synchronous Compensator on loss of field failure protection is analyzed. The existence of STATCOM has a pernicious effect on the operating time of generator field failure relay. To reduce the adverse effect of STATCOM a new phasor measurement unit based loss of excitation protection scheme is modelled in MATLAB/SIMULINK. Phasor measurement unit are high speed sensors that are used to estimate the magnitude and phase angle at a rate of 48 samples per cycle which makes it to detect fluctuations in voltage or current. The effect of STATCOM on PMU based LOE protection scheme are analysed for complete field failure and partial loss of field failure.
