Abstract

Cilicia, extending from Pamphylia in the west, to Syria in the east, lay on the busy maritime lanes of the Eastern Mediterranean between the Levant and the Aegean. The rugged Taurus Mountains separated Cilicia from the Anatolian plateau in the north, while the passage was facilitated by a few mountain passes and river valleys.
