Fiber optics in flexible cable applications in the pulp and paper industry

Abstract

The use of flexible fiber optic cables on high-speed log handling cranes in the pulp and paper industry is described. On these machines, the fiber optic technology provides a noise free communication link for the control system and enables clear video signal transmission from the crane's legs through the festoon system to the drivers cabin to support the crane operators for safe truck unloading. A basic description of fiber optic transmission systems and an overview of the types of fiber constructions available are presented.<>
