Abstract

From the mid-nineteenth century on China has undergone tremendous political and socioeconomic changes, at the same time traditionalism still persists in many aspects of Chinese life. This course examines the decline of Confucian order, the impact of the West, the Communist revolution, the role of nationalism, Maoism, current economic and political reforms, and the resurgence of China as a world power. Of particular concern will be the changes and continuities of traditional Chinese society in the modern world. 1. Quizzes 30% 2. Midterm 20% 3. Take-home Final Exam 40% 4.
