Abstract
The European Standard EN471 sets out the requirements for high-visibility (hi-vis) garments. The standard covers the area and colour of fluorescent materials and the retroreflectivity of reflective components in the garments. Requirements are defined for three classifications of garment, intended for use in low, medium and high-risk environments. The fluorescent background material provides daytime visibility and the reflective material around the chest, arms or legs provides nighttime reflectivity. 3M uses microscopic glass lenses and prismatic technology to produce Scotchlite Reactive Materials. Recent evaluations have shown that some hi-vis work wear garments on the market do not comply with EN471. The Health and Safety Executive states that it is the manufacturer's responsibility to ensure the garments are tested and classified in accordance with EN471. It is the employer's responsibility to ensure that the garments bought for the workforce are appropriately CE marked and that they are worn when required.
