Abstract
This paper analyzes the intellectual property (IP) creation of multi-national companies (MNCs) in developing countries. The analyses are conducted in China and Thailand where Japanese companies locate R&D (research and development) function heavily. In China, the MNCs of Taiwan and the United States are very active in creating IPs compared to their foreign direct investment (FDI). In Thailand, the MNCs of the United States are active in creating IPs compared to their FDI volume. Japanese MNCs are extremely inactive in creating IPs compared to their FDI volume. For the involvement of local talents, the involvement of local talents is low for patent creation and is high for industrial design creation in the case of Japanese MNCs in Thailand.
