Abstract
This paper investigates the effect of the electrical and the thermal characteristics of the insulating material of HVDC cables on the transient development during and after fast and slow polarity reversal events. Three sets of values of temperature and field coefficients of electrical conductivity are investigated in this study. The results show a strong effect of insulating material on both the amplitude of the transient electric field and the duration of the transient. The higher a, b coefficients, the greater the amplitude, but the faster the transient. The lower a, b coefficients, the lower the amplitude, but the longer the transient. The moderate field and temperature dependencies are recommended.
