Finding My Vey: Dilemmas of a Feminist Yiddishist Translator

Abstract

The author investigates the role translating to and from Yiddish, her mother tongue, has played in her life, in a variety of circumstances such as raising her children, participating in lesbian literary life, and writing her own poetry. Burstin chronicles her attempts to translate Yiddish women poets, and describes different approaches and quandaries resulting from her understanding of the tenuous situation of Yiddish.
