Abstract
: The research had as main objective the use of fly ash, an artificial pozzolana generated in thermoelectric plants, produced on a large scale and commonly discarded in the environment. In addition, the objective was to reduce the cost of engineering works by reusing soils that were initially unsuitable for such uses. For this purpose, the use of the residue in the chemical stabilization of two soils from the Alto Paraopeba region, state of Minas Gerais, was analyzed, with a view to its use in road works. The studied soil - fly ash mixtures consisted of 10% and 20% fly ash in terms of dry mass and had their mechanical behavior evaluated. The mechanical characterization was done through the compaction tests in the Proctor Normal energy, unconfined compressive strength and CBR. The results of unconfined compressive strength showed that for one soil there was an increase in resistance with the increase of fly ash content, while for the other soil there was a reduction in resistance. The CBR value and expansion results point to a maximum percentage of fly ash that should be incorporated into the mixtures, since, for both soils, there was an improvement in the mixture with 10% ash and worsening in the mixture with 20%.
