Abstract
Basic study of swarm parameters (Vs, α/Ρ and η/Ρ) are essential for the choice of a suitable gas mixture (binary or ternary), such as, SF6/N2 mixture, for a given application. In view of such an importance, breakdown potentials (Vs) have been measured in this study in SF6, N2, SF6/N2, freon (CCl2F2) and SFb/CCl2F2/N2 mixtures. Net ionisation coefficient α'/Ν, (α'/N)= [(α-η)/Ν] has also been evaluated, for a selected range of experimental conditions in SF6/ CCl2F2/Ν2 mixtures. Over the range of Nd studied (6.6 × 1016 to 132 × 1016 cm−2) Paschen's law was not found to hold good in SF6, while in SFb/N2 mixtures, addition of small quantities of N2 was observed to significantly reduce the deviation from the similarity theorem.
