Abstract
Inductive Output Tubes (IOT) or klystrodes are used to produce radiofrequency power in several industrial, research and medical applications. TV broadcasting and industrial heating represent the biggest percentage of these applications. Since the radiofrequency power is required in a continuous way, classical IOT power system topologies are based on a high voltage DC power supply, together with several power supplies floating on a negative high voltage potential. This paper presents a novel IOT pulsed power system, better adapted to particle accelerator applications, where the radiofrequency power is only required during short periods of time at a certain repetition frequency. A comparison between a classical IOT power system topology and an equivalent one based on the proposed pulsed topology will be presented by means of dimensioning an equivalent 400 kW RF peak power IOT based RF power system operating at 200 Hz repetition rate, together with validation results obtained by numerical simulation.
