Abstract
Enormous energy consumption and high latency have been the main issues in broadband passive optical networks (PONs). Hence, green dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) has been investigated widely. Nevertheless, few of these schemes can support latency-sensitive services while reducing the energy consumption. In this paper, an energy-efficient low-latency DBA scheme is introduced, which is based on a pairwise combination (PWC) method. The proposed scheme can dynamically adjust polling sequence to compact the cycle length, which improves latency performance. What's more, it can enhance the PON energy efficiency in case that both the US and DS transmission are considered. The simulation results show that the PWC-based DBA scheme can simultaneously reduce the energy consumption and improve packet latency.
