Abstract
Auscultatory method as a gold standard in determining blood pressure is subjective due to its dependency on hearing ability of each person. This subjectivity could be eliminated by establishing an instrument that is able to determine blood pressure level automatically. One of the ideas that could be proposed for developing an automatic blood pressure monitor is to automatize auscultatory method. This review presented recent development of automatic blood pressure monitor by recording Korotkoff sound and processing it digitally to determine blood pressure level and phases of the sounds that believed was associated with physiological condition. The reviewed studies showed that by processing Korotkoff sounds, the measurement results were accurate if compared with conventional method since their correlation coefficient is greater than 0.95 and the errors that obtained are less than 5 mmHg. The future work of this review is to design a similar instrumentation with different signal processing methods, i.e. discrete wavelet transform and peak finder algorithm.
