Abstract

Node metastases in head and neck cancer represent the main prognosis factor in these patients. Due to the variability in the prevalence of the node metastases in clinical and radiologically N 0 patient, and to the fact that node dissection is usually performed with the only purpose of the correct staging, it has been suggested the replacement of systematic lymphadenectomy by sentinel lymph node dissection during last decades. This technique, already recognized and standardized staging for melanoma and breast cancer clinical and radiologically No, would limit lymphadenectomy to selected cases. The aim of this paper is to assess the feasibility of sentinel lymph node dissection in cancer of the oral cavity and oropharynx and thyroid tumours. In order to do so, it was performed a systematic review of the literature published in English and Spanish in the past five years in major scientific databases.
