Abstract

Introduction : Depression is an emotional disorder where one of the groups who often experience depression is the elderly. 6 out of 10 elderly people at BSLU Mandalika Mataram said that they often feel lonely, unable to carry out their desired roles. Objective : This study was to see the effect of progressive muscle relaxation in combination with classical music therapy on changes in depression levels. Method : This is a pre-experimental research with One Group Pretest-posttest Design approach. The study population was all elderly living in BSLU Mandalika Mataram as many as 82 elderly. The sample was determined by purposive sampling based on the established criteria and obtained as many as 27 samples. Data on depression in the elderly was collected using the Geriatric Depression Scale-15, while to see the effect of treatment, the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test was used. Results : before being given depression treatment, the elderly were in the mild category as many as 18 elderly. (66.7%), moderate depression 9 elderly (33.3%), and normal 0 respondents. After being given treatment, most of them were in normal category as many as 11 elderly (40.7%), mild depression 10 elderly (37.1%) and moderate depression 6 elderly (22.2%). The value of sig (2-tailed) = 0.000 and = 0.05 then the value of sig (2-tailed) < so that Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. Conclusion : The results showed that there was an effect of progressive muscle relaxation combined with classical music therapy on changes in the level of depression in the elderly at BSLU Mandalika Mataram.
