Letters from Budapest (Budapesti Napló)

Abstract

This article is made up of excerpts from a diary kept by a Hungarian Jew, Borbála Szabó, in 1944 and 1945. These diary entries describe the last days of World War II in Budapest, and show the interior life of a surprisingly strong and mature young woman. The introduction, by translator Vera Szabó, explains the circumstances in which this remarkable document came to light in Hungary, and describes Szabó's post-war life.
