The Usefulness of the Indiscriminately Pro and Anti Categories of Religious Orientation

Abstract

The intrinsic and extrinsic scales were used to create four categories of religious orientation: intrinsic, indiscriminately pro, extrinsic, and indiscriminately anti. Specific a priori preductions concerning differences between the two indiscriminate categories as well as post hoc analyses of differences between all four categories were investigated. Predicted differences were obtained for various indices of religious manifestation (reported mystical experience, differential recall of religious humor, and differential approach to religious stimuli) as well as for measures indicating assumed conflict (stress as measured by voice tremors and repression-sensitization) among the indiscriminates.
