Abstract
Insulation Coordination is a critical part in the design of high voltage systems. In this paper, lightning overvoltage analysis of a real 380 kV gas insulated substation was performed using PSCAD/EMTDC to verify the insulation design and to investigate the adequacy and location of surge arrester. In lightning overvoltage analysis, direct stroke and back flashover phenomena were considered and each were investigated for two different scenarios. The simulation shows that the substation was well protected from lightning. However, the study also shows that removal of the surge arrester from the power transformers and the shunt rector did not cause insulation limit violations.
