Abstract

Fractal image compression allows fast decoding but suffers from long encoding time. By mapping similar regions within an image in the wavelet domain, we can use biorthogonal wavelet transform coefficients to find mappings which are identical to conventional blockwise mappings, thus the time-consuming encoding process is improved by wavelet-based hierarchical interpretation. In this paper, we show that the redundancy of a fractal with respect to scale variation is mirrored by its wavelet decomposition, so providing a 2D model of wavelet-based fractal image compression coding. A new hybrid coding algorithm can then be given.
