Abstract

Students' reading and writing skills are decisive for their understanding of natural sciences due to conceptual subject discourses. Herein, 8470 reasoning student responses to 13 open biology tasks are examined, coded for the extent to which students are able to argue scientifically. A larger proportion of 9th grade students rely on everyday language and ideas or wrong academic approach in their answers. Task examples, and an overview of related reading and science didactic research in the field, are included.
