The Research Method of Norbert Wiener

Abstract

Norbert Wiener (1894-1964) made fundamental contributions to several areas of knowledge including mathematics, technology, and philosophy. This paper examines his writings to identify common threads which together define his research method. These include the interconnectedness of society and research, the social responsibility of scientists, and the limits to what can be known in the world. These together help to explain the extent of his multi-disciplinary discoveries, including his cybernetics project.
