Abstract

Most recent condition monitoring work has been aimed at various AC machines but DC machines are still used in many traction and power drives. This paper reviews condition monitoring methods for the DC motors in order to apply an effective condition monitoring method for the 3 kV DC traction motors. The overall aims pf the work is aimed at reducing unexpected failures, maintenance costs and improving the 18E locomotive availability in South Africa.
