Abstract

This paper presents a complete analysis of a Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM), when it is intended to support a wind farm based on induction generators. Grid disturbances affect wind turbines with fixed speed generators directly connected to the grid, because they generate electromagnetic torque oscillations during and after faults. As a consequence, mechanical stress is presented in the gearbox and premature aging is prone to happen.
