The participants of this study were English teachers and students at the Al-Masduqiyah Islamic boarding school. This study uses two theories, namely the theory of Wolfson (1993) and the theory of Holmes (1983). The findings of the speech of compliment and compliment responses in this study contained 66 data. In the speech of compliment which has two categories, there are 11 data compared to 55 data, while in the response from the word of compliment which has three categories, it is found that there is a comparison of data between 45, 16, and 5 data.
