Abstract
The essay is based on new materials from the MSC Archives in Borgerhout, Belgium, and attempts to describe in more details the atmosphere in Coquilhatville in the beginning of the war and to reconstruct the incidents that occupied the white population of this city. A real war psychosis took hold of Coquilhatville, some Europeans becoming victims of an utter witch-hunt by the so-called "right-thinking" segment of the white population. The Africans observed all this tension within the white colonizing population with amazement and asked themselves a great number of questions. However, the administration censored all publications meant for them, preventing any mention of the war in Europe. On the other hand, these same Africans, closed off from any knowledge of the war, were expected to contribute to "the effort of war" through a new and devastating rubber campaign. Art being more eloquent and inconspicuous than speech, Father Jos Moeyens managed to insert a number of images protesting against this new rubber campaign in a rubber propaganda pamphlet from the Administration. Several domains are not touched upon. Other documents, like those of the local administration, the judiciary and the military, still have to be studied in order to complete the picture.
