Orthopedics: Shoulder Surgery

Abstract

In this chapter the essential aspects of anesthesia for shoulder surgery are reviewed. Specifically, regional nerve blocks that are most appropriate and the techniques, indications, and complications of such blocks are discussed. Alternatives to regional nerve blocks are also reviewed. The patient is to undergo arthroscopic rotator cuff repair in an ambulatory setting. The chapter is divided into preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative sections with important subtopics related to the main topic in each section. Discussion of preoperative evaluation includes the patient’s cardiac status and history of hypertension. Intraoperative issues addressed include choice of anesthesia (interscalene nerve block) and induction, use of laryngeal mask airway, and management of hypotension. Postoperative concerns discussed are pain management, dyspnea, and nausea.
