Fraternity, Charity, and Community: The Knights of Columbus and Milwaukee, 1900–1918

Abstract:In the twentieth century’s first decades, the Knights of Columbus in Milwaukee sought a significant role in their city’s formation. As a Catholic fraternal organization, the Knights of Columbus worked to advance the civic and moral character of Milwaukee through charitable works, political involvement, support for Catholic education, and aid for soldiers during the First World War. By examining newspapers, newsletters, and the Knights’ own histories, this article highlights how the Knights of Columbus contributed to Milwaukee’s development by influencing the city’s social and political structures.
