Abstract
A discussion of the historical approach to the design of U.S. Navy naval electric power systems offers insight into advanced approaches for the design of future naval electric power systems. The unique characteristics of naval electric power systems are discussed, especially with regards to how they contrast with commercial utility power systems. In light of the background and uniqueness, the basic questions confronting the designer of naval electric power systems are offered.
