Admission control and bandwidth management for VLANs

Abstract

We explore how 802.1Q(p) can be successfully exploited within the DIFFSERV framework. Borrowing from work on INTSERV and SBM, but in keeping with a KISS philosophy, we analyze how, in combination with admission control and bandwidth management, we can deliver services with guarantees of quality for applications such as VoIP on a per-VLAN basis. In conclusion, we show that it possible to use a pure layer-2 infrastructure to support large-scale deployment of new services in a wide regional area.
