Abstract
A study of negative impedance and its applications to power electronics is presented in this paper. In a power electronic circuit, passive components consist of parasitic resistance, inductance, and capacitance which limit the performance of the converter. For an example, the parasitic inductance of wire could cause resonance and distortion of the gate drive signal. As a result, the performance and efficiency of the power converter would be significantly deteriorated. To remove these unwanted parasitic elements in a power electronic circuit, we propose a new concept of negative impedance method. A study of the properties and connections of negative impedance are presented. Two examples are given to illustrate the practical applications. The improvement on the circuit performance with negative impedance is experimentally demonstrated.
