Abstract

This paper explains the basic phenomenon of spalling in high strength concrete (HSC). Reviewed are the various issues related to spalling, such as reinforcement exposure and impact of safe environment in fire locations. Also reviewed are results from a number of studies to illustrate the critical parameters that govern spalling in HSC structural members under fire conditions. The paper presents data from experimental studies to illustrate the effectiveness of polypropylene fibers in minimizing spalling in HSC structural members.
