Abstract
A remote access and measurement system which uses wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) techniques is proposed for a passive double star network (PDSN). This system is used to demonstrate fault detection and location. In transmission experiments for the proposed system, in-service fault location does not affect the transmission characteristics at communication wavelengths. On the basis of these results, this system is suitable for characterizing branched fibers in a PDSN, and AURORA (automatic optical fiber operation support system) can access and measure branched fibers remotely by using this system.
