Abstract
Local area network (LAN) technologies such as Ethernet and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) are being used to build data acquisition and telemetry systems which provide higher performance, greater modularity, easier reconfiguration, and less cost than traditional architectures. This paper discusses the use of various LAN technologies in ocean measurement system applications.
