Abstract
The availability of ultra wide band radar (UWBR) systems with their subtle characteristics enhance the complexity of achieving electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). For efficient applications an UWBR system requires a total radiated peak power of the order of a few GW with a transmitted pulse of several hundred picoseconds and a corresponding rise and fall time. The generation and coherent radiation of several hundred picoseconds double exponential pulse, with a spatial extent of several centimeters, requires special EMC considerations to achieve intrasystem EMC. For long range wide area surveillance radar requiring effective radiated power in the GW range makes the intersystem EMI problem effectively insurmountable. This paper highlights the electromagnetic interference (EMI) and compatibility aspects pertaining to UWBR systems. The electromagnetic environment (EME) and its impact in intrasystem and intersystem EMI problems, their control and the applicability of the existing standards are critically analyzed and discussed.
