Abstract
This purpose of present study was used the signal detection theory to evaluate the proper way to identify the meaning of information signs in traffic facilities. An empirical study of information signs used in the Taipei mass rapid transit system was performed to assess the proposed model. The clear and definite implication of posted signs and the impact those signs have on cognitional decision-making were measured by the sensitivity index d' and bias ß as defined by signal detection theory. For the design of information signs, the ease with which a sign can be identified not only depends upon the clarity of the signs but also depends on cognizable judgment tendency. A properly designed pictograph will have an impact on the convenience of the general public. Placing importance on sign design and human convenience will enhance the satisfaction of patrons with public facilities.
