Abstract

This study is concerned with the investigation of thin film media with varying crystallographic orientations of the grains in the magnetic layer. CoCrPtTa films with a CrTi underlayer were deposited on glass substrates. AN, NiAl or Ta seed layers were deposited in order to control the crystal orientation and grain size of the underlayer, and hence the magnetic layer on three ofthe 6lms (samples B, C, and D). The control sample A had no seed layer. The CrTi underlayer was used to control the morphology of the magnetic layer. The detailed crystallographic and recording properties of these flms have been reported previously [I] and are summarised in table.
