Abstract
A significant proportion of patients who develop epileptic seizures in infancy later go on to have learning difficulties in school, and some become institutionalized for mental retardation {Keith 1964, Rodin 1968, Aicardi and Chevrie 1971, Schiottz-Christensen and Bruhn 1973). This contrasts with adult epilepsy where, in the absence of status epilepticus, seizures neither damage the brain nor permanently impair intelligence (Fetterman and Barnes 1934, Lennox I960, Rodin 1968).
