The administrative structure for local governance has always existed in one form or the other since colonial period. However, the poser is how autonomous are they as a unit of government and to what extent are they effective. This study relying on available secondary data, adduced that local governments have constitutional responsibilities, its autonomy is greatly eroded by other higher tier governments, and that lack of autonomy impedes its effectiveness. Way forward suggested include, constitutional reforms, limited role for both state and federal governments and financial autonomy for effectiveness. Abstract
The focus of this study is to examine the relationship between autonomy and effectiveness of local government in Nigeria. The administrative structure for local governance has always existed in one form or the other since colonial period.
