Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of Motivational Interviewing technique used in pre-obese and obese nursing students on weight loss. Methods: The study was conducted with a quasi-experimental randomized control. The study was conducted with nursing students studying in the Faculty of Health Sciences of a public university located on the Anatolian side of Istanbul. The population of the study consisted of 1002 nursing students in the Department of Nursing and 144 students fulfilling the prerequisites of BMI > 25; the study was completed with 60 students who met all criteria. Sociodemographic questionnaire and structured Motivational Interviewing (MI) Forms were used as data collection tools. Results: In the study, there was a significant difference between the two the weight status of the experimental and control groups before and after the MI implementation (z=-2.166, p=0.030; z=-2.126, p=0.034). While there was a significant difference in BMI values of experimental and control groups before MI technique (z=-2.274, p=0.023), no statistically significant difference was found after MI technique (z=-.404 p=0.686). Conclucion: The MI technique used in this study is an effective method to help students to lose weight. However, it is debatable whether it is effective enough to make a difference on BMI and further studies are recommended.
